The looooong anticipated Diablo 3 release date has been pushed back twice now, once late last year when Blizzard backed off from a Q4 2011 target and again today when they announced they will not release Diablo 3 in the first quarter, but instead are “targeting a second quarter launch.” So when the hell are we going to see Diablo 3 go live?
First of all, like I explained in December, Blizzard has a solid record of giving 2 months warning before a release. “Wrath of the Lich King’s release date was announced on September 15th and it went live November 13th, Cataclysm’s was announced October 4th and went live December 7th and finally Starcraft II’s release date was announced May 3rd and went live on June 27th.” That’s why many of us already realized that we wouldn’t see it live in Q1 (by the end of March, less than 2 months away). If they had announced a release date today, it would still have fallen in April which would be in the second quarter of 2012.
Later in the announcement, Blizzard mentioned that they would have more news in the coming weeks about the release. Does that mean that they’ll be giving us a release date? I wouldn’t bet on it, but there’s a good chance. This would land us a late April or early May release. Which isn’t unbelievable considering the progress Blizzard has been making with the game and the expansion of the beta invites sent out last week.
What do we do until then? I have no idea. Let me know if you have any good ideas though.
