It might seem early to talk about the inevitable Diablo 3 expansion, but many players have already solo’d to the end of Inferno and have long since either started another character or flew the coop. While I’m still working my way diligently through the game many people are asking “will there be a diablo 3 expansion?”The answer is yes, there is already a Diablo 3 expansion in the works. How do I know this? I slept with a Blizzard employee and she told me so. Alright, that’s not true. In February of 2011 a slate of upcoming release dates was leaked. Supposedly this slate of dates was part of an important meeting, probably intended to legitimize their progress and demonstrate a long term strategy.

The most interesting part about the slate is that it started coming true within a couple of months.The Bnet2 Map Market was released in Q2 of 11 and we later found out that Diablo 3 was expected to release in Q4 of 2011. We also found out that Starcraft II’s expansion was set to be done at the end of 2012, but that disappeared into the abyss of media hype for Diablo 3 and now Mists of Pandaria.

Speaking of Mists of Pandaria’s release date (it’s August or September), it was originally planned for a Q2 release. What about Diablo 3′s expansion? It was originally planned for Q2 of 2013, followed by a second expansion in Q4 2014. That’s about 18 months between each release, which is pretty ambitious considering Blizzard’s release schedule of World of Warcraft expansions (it’s always been 2 full years) and their ambitious plans to release things like the RMAH and PvP that have fallen through.

So we don’t know what the expansion is or exactly when it will be released, but we know Blizzard and it seems fair to guess that an expansion will be announced in about a year and then be released in another year. Some questions I have on my mind is will it add levels, add difficulties, add content, add a class? How will they add an Act without it being injected into the easier difficulties?
