How to Level Jewelcrafting

There are only 4 full days left before the release and one of the big questions you should be asking yourself are: what are you going to do with your gold, are you going to level jewelcrafting, are you going to level blacksmithing or are you going to gear up your character? Previously we talked about how we should sell our gold asap for real-money. This is no longer an option since the RMAH will not be available for at least a week after launch. I suspect the market will still be pretty crazy the day the RMAH goes live, and if it actually works properly selling your gold will still be a great option, but I wouldn’t count on it. We’re going to want to invest in our characters for the first week until the RMAH goes live and I think Jewelcrafting might be a worthy candidate for doing so.

Blacksmithing or Jewelcrafting

Jewelcrafting is notably easier than Blacksmithing to level and manage. It costs much less to level and once it’s level all you do is load up my gem calculator, buy, combine and sell gems and you’ll either make a profit along with all the other jewelcrafters or you will not. Blacksmithing involves hundreds of possible crafts and infinite possible combinations. A large amount of theory crafting and calculations have yet to be made regarding the chances of making gold off a certain investment. It will be uncharted territory.

Jewelcrafting might attract droves of players, dropping the profit margin down ridiculously fast making it simply not worth it to combine or deal with gems. Although, as I pointed out months ago a single radiant star gem maybe worth as much as a trillion gold. Pages of Jewelcrafting, Tomes of Jewelcrafting and Tomes of Secrets are going to be needed in high quantities to level Jewelcrafting. Tomes of Secrets will also be needed by blacksmiths and each type of page is required to combine some gems. I think these will some of the most expensive materials and it could send the value of a radiant star up to many trillions instead of just one.

Leveling Jewelcrafting

So let’s say you do choose Jewelcrafting. You should level and use it fast. If you don’t go fast with it, it’s not worth spending your first few gold on it. You will need 130,000 gold, 10 Pages of Jewelcrafting (found in Nightmare), 20 Tomes of Jewelcrafting (found in Hell) and 40 Tomes of Secrets (found only in Inferno) to reach Exalted which will ultimately allow you to combine into radiant stars. A single Radiant Star requires 21,000 gold and 6 Tomes of Secrets to create, along with 3 Perfect Stars, each which require 18,000 gold and 4 Tomes of Secrets to create. This adds up, exponentially, very fast.

Early in the beta it was stated that only tier 5 gems would drop, but this was redacted to tier 8 gems recently. So everything beyong level 8 will require combination by a jewelcrafter.

If you decide not to level an artisan, focus on gear initially. Your gold will quickly devalue but your gear might be a sound investment. Get yourself to a point where you can test yourself in Inferno as quickly as possible. Whether beating it is a realistic early-goal or not is yet to be determined, but certainly being able to farm the early stages will open up a lot of gold making opportunities to you.
