How to Make Gold with Jewelcrafting

Is it possible to make gold with your Jeweler? Yes, but right now a lot of players are just giving their money away when combining the wrong gems. If you haven’t already, you need to level your jeweler. You can read my jewelcrafting leveling guide to see how much it will cost you and how much work it will take to open up the rare gem tiers.

Cheap Gems

The problem right now is that so many people are leveling and finding low tier gems and they are just dumping them on the auction house. This causing 3 chipped gems to be worth more than 1 flawed gem. This means that it’s simply not worth it to combine 3 chipped gems into 1 flawed gem. Why are the prices on the low end so high? Why are people even buying these shitty gems? Probably because they are idiots, but I don’t know. The prices of low level gems will drop all the way to their vendor prices and no one (except new players who have no clue) will combine them.

So don’t try to make gold combining low tier gems.

High tier gems

Since only the first 8 tiers are found in the game as drops, and at the time of this writing only really 6-7 are being found in Hell and Inferno, players are charging the proper amounts of gems over that tier, but there aren’t a lot of buyers because mats are so damn expensive. This is the only potential way to make gold with your Jeweler right now. Start by scanning and writing down the price of tiers 6 through 14, then see if the following tier is at least 3 times more expensive than the tier below it. If it isn’t then ignore it. You also need to add the cost of materials in, which include Pages of Jewelcrafting, Tomes of Jewelcrafting and Tomes of Secrets.

Gem Calculator

To make the above step easier you can use my gem calculator. You can take prices from the auction house and drop them into the fields and then enter the type of gem you want and the price the auction house is asking for it. There are more instructions on that page showing you how to use the calculator but it will help you calculate exactly how much to spend, or not to spend, on each gem.

Making gold with your Jeweler right now is possible only if you have a high level jeweler but it is rather costly to get one. Make sure you’re serious about making an attempt to make gold with Jewelcrafting before you spend a single gold at your Jeweler.

  1. I leveled my JC out of necessity. My Barbarian had no real major roadblocks until the last boss on Normal. I just didn’t have sufficient healing.

Putting a +105 life per hit gem in my offhand’s socket made the fight almost easy.

There weren’t any for sale, and I always intended to eventually invest in JC.

I tried putting another up for sale for 140,000g but it never showed up when searching. Eventually someone else listed one for 300Kg; I relisted mine, and it still didn’t show up, nor did it sell even after the “Last ten trades” actually had a value.

Now I’m using a +190 life, and may consider making another (either for +380 life, or for a nearly unkillable lvl 12 character  ), with a view towards eventually making the +300 life.

I suspect the real problem with combining gems is that gold is still so sparse. In a month or so, I’d expect to see a bit of inflation. As people get more money, and people start making the higher gems, Flawless square gems should rise in price until it starts to become feasable to make them from square gems (Which I THINK will keep falling in price until they start to be usefull in combining them). Given enough time, it might even be profitable to make square gems.

I doubt it’ll ever be worthwile combining chipped gems.

Because of this, supply of “page of jewelcrafting’s” supply will probably always massively outstrip demand as every player will need at most 40 in order to level their JC, and anyone going through Nightmare will likely get more than that for every character. So it will soon be easier to vendor them than try and make a profit greater than the 15% AH cut.

I also expect inflation may make blacksmithing more viable, raising the price of all crafting mats.

At least I hope so. The high cost in gold of crafting anything in the game, has killed my dreams of making money as I do in WoW. The 10 item limit in the AH and the mandatory 2 days wait for unsold goods to return, hurts as well.

I’m looking forward to the RMAH, so I can have 10 more non-commodities for sale every 2 days.

  2. I don’t get why people on here think that prices will go up from “inflation.” Okay, so many players will have lots of gold. Fine. But why does that mean prices go up, specifically on commodities? MANY MORE players will be selling gems. LOTS MORE, in fact. I must be missing something, as if tons of people have tons of gems and pages, the prices should be worth next to nothing as many people will keep lowering the price down to nothing in attempt to sell their gems/pages, etc?
