How to: Secret Cow Level in Diablo 3

If I had a penny for every e-mail, instant message and text message with people asking me: “how do I get to the secret cow level” I’d be… well I wouldn’t be rich, but I’d have some pennies. In Diablo 2 the cow level was used by some players to gather gems and to just have fun. In Diablo 3 we don’t have much information yet how to get to the cow level but we’re pretty damn certain it exists.

In the original Starcraft Blizzard enabled the cheat code “there is no cow level” to reaffirm the lack of a cow level. In Diablo 3, all we have to do is take a look into the game files to see what’s lurking beneath the depths of hell… and what do we find? Nothing other than pink and teal unicorns, teddy bears and angry looking cows!

Secret Cow Level

So as you can see not only is there a cow level in Diablo III it’s probably filled with pink teddy bears and teal unicorns. My favorite! What role will it play in Diablo III? Well, in 2008 Jay Wilson who is a really important guy at Blizzard, said something along these lines:

Wilson: [laughs] We don’t really know at this point. I really like the idea of secret stuff that Diablo II put forward, but it’s not the kind of thing we would decide this early. But if we have something, I can assure people will be happy with it.

I will say the thing I liked about the cow level was that it wasn’t just fluff; there was stuff that you could do there that actually had purpose within the game. The thing I didn’t like about it was that it almost replaced part of the game. And so, if we looked to add something like that, we’d be a little smarter about it. We would want it to have a function within the game, but we wouldn’t want it to replace any core content, which is something that I think the cow level really did.

Based on that, chances are it offers a unique game play experience for players and is probably more involved than the Diablo II cow level. I bet it’s a solid place to farm and even an extended quest line involving rescuing our equine friends from the evil cow terrorizors of … the world. I bet it was inspired by:

Regardless, as soon as the secret unicorn/hello kitty/nyan cat level is unlocked I will sure as hell share it here so make sure you join Diablo 3 Artisans and get free updates telling you what’s going on in Diablo III.

Important: Many of the strategies and tips I share here were originally inspired by the people at the Diablo 3 Gold Secrets Forum. If you're serious about making the big bucks in Diablo 3, or just being the best players, you need to signup ASAP.

  1. I encountered a NPC which enables a portal to a dungeon full with rare mobs, but he said he can do it only one time. Btw a timer came on when I entered the dungeon.

  2. cinemablend has an article up on it, you need to craft the Staff of Herding, the recipe is a rare drop, as are all the components, plus you’ll need to spend 100,000 gold on one component at a vendor.

Now if you could farm the items needed, you could probably make a good deal of money off of it, I can see these being listed for a million gold….

  3. The items are bound to your account. Nice thought though. So far I found a mushroom for Act I, and a bell from a vendor in Act II.

  4. The mats required to make the Staff of herding are all account bound, you will not be able to profit from the mats or the final staff.
