Can You Really Make Money in Diablo 3?

Today a friend of mine asked me: “do you think D3′s “sell shit for real money” system will actually be worth investing in?” Now, let me be clear, this guy had no idea what I’ve been up to the last 6 months. As far as he knows I’m still playing World of Warcraft and collecting virtual gold there, which is only half true.

I don’t know what system he’s talking about and what he means by investing in it. I consider the question to really be: “do you think people will really make significant amounts of money playing Diablo 3 and do you think it’s worth me investing my time in?” This question makes a lot more sense, and my answer is an unequivocal YES.

At the risk of boring my existing audience by addressing this question again, here is why I think this is an opportunity you should take advantage of:

Will people make real money in Diablo 3?

Yes, yes, yes and yes. I described last week using a bell curve (real money in diablo 3) that, no matter what, a small portion of people will find themselves “ahead of the curve.” This is simply a statistical inevitability. Just as there were players who, very quickly, reached gold cap in the first years of World of Warcraft there will also be players who have insane amounts of gold in Diablo 3 in the first month. But how much gold will they have? How awesome will they be and what will all that be worth in a real money auction house?

The fact is, it doesn’t matter how much gold they have. It just matters that they are in the top 1%. It doesn’t matter if the top 1% only has 1,000,000 gold because if only 1% of the players have that much gold then that much gold is worth an incredible amount of real money. If the top players have 100 million gold then that 100 million gold will have the same relative value.

What’s the relative value of having more gold than most people in a video game? Your typical player won’t drop $100 on a legendary weapon, but your pseudo-celebrity or trust fund retiree will. There is no telling how much some players will be willing to pay to be the best in a video game but I will bet you that how ever much you’re thinking in your head right now is probably a low estimate.

As long as Blizzard maintains scarcity in Diablo 3 there will be a small group of players who have that scarcity and as long as players can use real money to legally buy those exclusive items then there will be a fair and mutual exchange between rich people in RL and rich people in game. Most important of all, the very best time for scarcity is in the first week of the game.

Is it worth investing time into?

If you think you’re any good at video games, then YES. All you have to do is play more and play better than most people in the game and you will profit accordingly. Yesterday I gave you a list of the top 5 Diablo 3 time sinks that you need to avoid if you want to make money. I’ve given you some of the best farming strategies in diablo 3. I’ve just began to show you how to use the auction house in diablo 3 and in the weeks to come I’m going to show you more of the best builds and best strategies to use in the game. So if you have any amount of self worth, subscribe to my feed, stick around, join the battle on May 15th, kick some ass, take some names and then sell shit on the auction house for a nice profit.

If you don’t have any self worth or any semblance of confidence, get the hell out of here you’re just wasting my bandwidth.
